Meet Obie!

Obie is a young pointer mix with a medium energy level. He gets along well with his kennelmate Lucy, and other dogs when outside in the exercise area. Obie loves attention and affection, and generally responds when being called. He can be shy and reserved with strangers, but comes around and becomes friendly and “tail wagging” happy pretty quickly. He adores kids! But needs to learn not to jump on them. He would probably be easily trained, as he appears to have a good attention span and is eager to please people.

Obie is an often-overlooked gem in our shelter, that would make a wonderful pet for anyone or any family looking for a dog with a moderate amount of energy, a lot of smarts, and a whole lot of love and devotion to give.

You, too, can adopt a 3-legged sports star!

Last month, the ASPCA in New York awarded "Best in Show" at their K9 talent contest to Prince, a three-legged baseball star.

If you would like to show off with your own 3-legged, talented doggie, you are in luck! You don't need to go to New York, you just need to come to The Animal Shelter right here in Anniston and meet Maizy.
Maizy came to the shelter with her hind leg already amputated and well healed. She has absolutely no trouble getting around on it - in fact, fetch is her favorite game! She is an excellent retriever who even brings the ball back.

Maizy can be leery of men, but can learn who the "good guys" are when they prove trustworthy. She was quite the talker upon arrival (mostly, it seems, saying "take me out to play!"), but is beginning to mellow with maturity. She definitely enjoys moments of chilling out and sharing affection these days.

If you would like to meet Maizy, please contact the shelter at (256)236-1581 or ashelter@bellsouth.net

Spring Wonders and Woes

Ah, Spring! Time to enjoy the blooming flowers, warmer temperatures, and longer days. Time for the pups to frolic and the kitties to enjoy some fresh air.

Also time to haul out the preventive to protect against the fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes! The Animal Shelter could use your help keeping our animals safe from these dangerous pests. We need K9 Advantix for our dogs and CapStar or Frontline for our cats.

Won't you think of us as you get protection for your own pets? Even a single dose sent our way (1201 Parkwood Dr, Anniston, AL 36201) would help. Or, if you can spare it, a box shipped to us would be a blessing! Online vendors often have sales this time of year. Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted.

For 2 Dogs, 2 Years and Counting

Can you help these long-term residents? Tyke and Carly have both been at the shelter for over 2 years. We need help reaching out to people who are looking for that someone special to add to their lives. Please share their stories!

Carly is the total package! She is a super-fun girl who loves to run and play. Once she is out of energy, she loves to be loved on as well. Her personality shines and she exudes happiness.

Carly has spent her entire life at the shelter. That means she has never had the opportunity to live in a home or become housetrained. Carly is eager to please and anyone with the experience, patience, love, and time to invest in helping Carly fit into a home life will be rewarded many times over. She truly is joy on four legs! Carly can also be fussy about which other dogs she likes, so a meet-and-greet with any other dog(s) in the home is a must.

Can you help Carly finally find the right home for her? Please share her on Facebook or tweet about her.

Tyke is a dog who can adapt to fit your needs. He can be independent and keep himself busy when needed, or he can be a big silly goof with puppy antics when you are ready to play!

Tyke is a skeptic (after 2 years, who can blame him?). He can be doubtful of new people until he really gets to know them and is certain they are trustworthy. Once he trusts you, his inner puppy comes bursting out! Despite being an adult dog, he has some puppy mannerisms that might be too much for very small kids. Adults and young adults will suit him best. Tyke was past puppyhood when he came to the shelter, so even though 2 years is too long to remember his house dog days, he will probably relearn quickly from someone who is patient and has his trust.

Can you help Tyke finally find the right home for him? Please share him on Facebook or tweet about him.

To find out more about either of these dogs, please contact The Animal Shelter (Anniston, AL) at (256) 236-1581 or ashelter@bellsouth.net

Meet Mack!

It's time to introduce you to another of our Super Seniors - it's Mack! Mack is a total love sponge. If you sit, he will sit on your foot and ask for love. If you walk, he will follow you in case you want to stop and give him some love. Mack does get grumpy if another dog tries to share in his love. So, a home where he can get the lion's share of attention would be happiest for Mack - either an only dog or with an independent dog who won't try to mooch! He would make a great companion for someone who spends a great deal of time at home and wants some company.

Can you help us find the right home for this experienced love sponge? If you are interested in Mack, please call (256)236-1581 or email ashelter@bellsouth.net

Thanks for the Love!

Zak, Pumpkin, and Lucky say "Thank you!"

These smiling dogs have even more to smile about, since all of them are now fully sponsored for their heartworm treatment! Thanks to everyone who contributed in any amount. We'll keep you updated as they get their treatment and become adoption-ready :)

The pups want to remind you that this disease is preventable - mosquito season is coming, and they want your dogs to be protected!

Heartworm Disease is caused by the mosquito-born heartworm. Entering the bloodsteam via a mosquito bite, these little monsters lodge in the lungs, arteries, and heart, where they grow and reproduce. Untreated, heartworm disease is lethal.

Prevention is available in monthly doses that can cost as little as $5/month. Here in the South, mosquitoes are a common & constant threat. Please use preventive to save your own dog's heart!
