More Shelter Good News!

We have two additional pieces of good news to share!

First, thank you goes to Cheyenne for asking for gifts for the shelter animals at her 12th birthday party! Thank you Cheyenne and all the party-goers! Enjoy photos here.

Second, the shelter is pleased to receive a grant from Petfinder.com Foundation that will allow us to inoculate our dogs against highly-contagious kennel cough for a year! Read this article for details. The funds come in part from The Animal Rescue Site, so remember to Click to Give so they can continue to fund these important grants.

Thank you, Honda!

Each July, participants in the Honda Star volunteer program put some sweat equity into improving the shelter. This year, the volunteers replaced damaged ceiling tiles indoors, attacked some very overgrown brush outdoors, and even dug a much-needed drainage trench! Enjoy these photos of the day. Thank you Honda!!

A Message from Keyta

Where are you? Did you get lost? I can understand that - the shelter is hard to find. But there are these things called cell phones, and if you call the shelter on one, they will give you turn-by-turn directions! You see, they want you to find me, too. I've been waiting now for over two years.

I feel bad for you. You have missed two whole years of Keyta hugs! Keyta silly moments and Keyta silly play and Keyta grins. How have you gotten by without me? And what if you already have another dog? That poor thing, missing so much tussle-time with me. Or maybe you need to look for my companion, too. See, I love dogs! There are plenty of dogs here, one of them would surely love to join me in our very own yard. Just understand, when it comes to attention, I get dibs. I am owed an awful lot of snuggle time.

The people here love me and tell me how wonderful I am. But at the end of the day, they all go home. Home. That sure sounds like a nice place to be.

Hugs,

Meet Breezy!

There's no doubt that Breezy is part Golden! While all her kennelmates are running around the yard, you can find Breezy settled in next to the nearest person, basking in the attention. She is a gorgeous red-head with the best disposition you could ever want. She really deserves a family to share her love with.

Meet Babs!

BABS is a friendly girl but not hyper, and what a great smile! She is always in a good mood - except when she sees the mail truck! She lets that truck know it isn't welcome, so she'll need to be kept safe and secure when delivery trucks come around. Babs is also a quick study - she will sit attentively and catch every piece of food tossed to her! Do you have room in your life for this smart, smiling girl?

Babs is a member of The One Club - she has been looking for the right one for over 1 year. Isn't it time she found home?

Pamper Your Paws for a Cause!

Go Green with The Animal Shelter!

The Animal Shelter is proud to announce a new, environmentally responsible community service initiative designed to help alleviate the fast growing environmental problem of e-waste in the workplace and homes.

But we need your help…

Simply dust off your old cell phone, digital camera, mp3 player or laptop computer and drop it off at Secondhand Tails Thrift Store and 100% of the proceeds from the recycling of these items will benefit The Animal Shelter!

Items do not have to be working to be recyclable!

For more information call Secondhand Tails at (256) 847-1125 or visit the store at
6500 McClelland Blvd. in Anniston.

Meet Thelma!

Thelma is a cutie, no arguments! She is a playful girl with a constantly-wagging tail who wants room to bound and chase and run - and of course someone to share the fun with!

Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to get adopted? Our Hearts of Gold program is designed to highlight how beautiful they truly are. Can you open your heart to one of these golden dogs?

July 4th Reminders!

Please join us for a few festivities this extended weekend!

On JULY 3, bring a voucher and go to Books-a-Million in Oxford to stock up on your summer reading. We will get a cash donation for each voucher! Valid from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On JULY 4 and JULY 5, stop by our booth near the theater at Quintard Mall! We have all sorts of goodies and giveaways, and you can sign up to volunteer or learn more about our adoptable animals.

A very important reminder for all pet owners ~ while we enjoy the excitement and understand the noises associated with Independence Day, our animals friends are confused and often terrified. Please be sure you keep them in a safe spot that is as quiet as possible. Even if you don't normally keep a collar on them, please be sure during this stressful time to keep ID on your pets in case they do panic and get loose. The safest type of ID is a microchip, which can't fall off or be removed. The Shelter offers microchipping for only $20.

Enjoy the holiday and stay SAFE!

Update on the Geriatric Collie

This beautiful senior citizen generated a lot of interest when we were seeking a foster situation for her final time. We have learned that Granny, as her foster named her, passed away quietly a couple weeks ago. We are so grateful that she spent her final weeks in a warm, loving home. It takes a special person to take home an animal whose time may be limited - but it is so rewarding to know you have given that animal happiness until the end!

If you think you would like the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes with helping an older dog have the best years (or months or even weeks) of his life, won't you consider Boone? Boone is a silly senior :) He does a funny little jig when you scratch his back, and he greets every day with a smile. We could all learn something about living each day to its fullest from Boone! You won't regret bringing him into your life.
