Save a Heart this Valentine's

Three of our wonderful dogs have tested positive for Heartworm Disease.

Heartworm Disease is caused by the mosquito-born heartworm. Entering the bloodsteam via a mosquito bite, these little monsters lodge in the lungs, arteries, and heart, where they grow and reproduce. Untreated, heartworm disease is lethal.

Prevention is available in monthly doses that can cost as little as $5/month. Sadly, many people do not give their dogs preventive - even here in the South, where mosquitoes are a common & constant threat.

The result? Dogs like Lucky, Pumpkin, and Zak. Beautiful, happy, adoptable dogs who are slowly dying from a preventable disease.

Treatment is expensive and uncomfortable, but unavoidable if we want to save these dogs and offer them for adoption. Won't you help us give them the treatment they need, so they can find the homes they deserve? Please contribute to their heartworm funds.

Yup, I know what you are thinking. How on earth does a young Husky named Lucky end up with a deadly disease? Don't ask me, ask the folks who decided not to put me on heartworm preventive. Oops, but you can't, 'cause they abandoned me at a shelter. The shelter wants to save me. Will you help them?

In case you were wondering - yes! Purebreeds can get heartworm disease, too. I'm Pumpkin, and I am a happy, playful, silly Basset who loves life and wants to keep living it. Will you help me?

Last but never least! I'm Zak, a good ole Southern hound who doesn't deserve a bad ole Southern disease like heartworms. Please help get these things outta me, so I can continue being a happy, smiling (and many say handsome!) dog looking to charm my way into a home that will love me enough to keep me safe.

Meet Buster!

Buster is blessed with a golden coat AND a golden heart. He always has a soft, sweet expression on his handsome face - and just imagine how soft that coat will be with regular brushing! He is quiet, polite, wonderful with his kennelmate, and such an all-around good boy that it is hard to understand why he's been waiting at the shelter for an entire year.

If you are interested in Buster, please call the shelter at 256-236-1581.

Dixie Dogs Barn Gets a Facelift

It took two Saturdays in the cold and the drizzle, but The Animal Shelter's volunteers came through for our Dixie Dogs! The pups now have a double-layer of gravel under their feet in their outdoor runs, which will help keep the muck and the bugs away. They definitely appear to enjoy their improved environment!

BUT, we still need some help........

They may have clean rock underfoot, but some of our dogs don't have a roof overhead!

We are in need of some corrugated metal roofing to replace damaged or missing sections. Scratch-and-dent is a-okay with us!

We have some ideas, but if you know anyone who can help, please email ashelter@bellsouth.net

Meet Peanut!

Peanut is just the right guy for someone looking for a sensible companion! He is cute as can be, the perfect size to go anywhere with you (maybe perhaps 30lbs), and while he still knows how to kick up his heels, he is not wild or crazy. Peanut would love to find the perfect home before his one year anniversary at the shelter next month.
If you are interested in Peanut, please contact the shelter at (256) 236-1581 or ashelter@bellsouth.net
Can you help Peanut find home?

Cold temps = scary times for Shelter

Can you imagine having to heat a large metal building when the temperature dips below freezing? Can you imagine hundreds of dog and cat lives depending on that heat? That's the challenge The Animal Shelter in Anniston, AL faces every winter.

This winter presents an even greater challenge, with weeks of bitter cold driving the heating bill to extremes. Needless to say, we are all nervous for what the near future holds.

The shelter struggles mightily against the odds to keep housing adoptable animals as best as possible in the housing they have. In 2009, the heating bill nearly got the better of them, and the gas company cut off service that spring due to unpaid bills. YOU can help prevent that happening this year.

Many people giving only a little can accomplish a lot! Can you spare the price of one meal out to keep a homeless dog or cat warm this winter?

Please ChipIn!
