Meet Fern!

Fern is such a great dog! She is always wearing a smile and has yet to meet a dog she can't get along with. While she loves to run around the yard, she is also happy to sit by your side and soak up attention. And how so many people have been able to resist those adorable mis-matched ears, we just don't understand!

Fern is a member of The ONE Club - she has been looking for"the one" for over 1 year. Isn't it about time she found home?

The Shelter+ Challenge is back!

Once again, the Animal Rescue Site and Petfinder.com are offering a number of monetary prizes in the Shelter+ Challenge spring edition! We made a strong showing in the Alabama rankings last fall. Can we do even better this spring?

It's FREE, it's EASY, and we could win $1,000 for our animals by winning the most weekly or state votes! So, this time, we are focusing on specific weeks to "get out the vote!" We are asking you to please encourage everyone in your address book to vote for us once a day for the week of Monday, April 27 through Sunday, May 3. Easy ways to remember to vote are to set your home page to the voting page for that week, or to set a computer reminder.

(Anyone voting every single day through July 26 gets extra doggie kisses & kitty purrs!)

Instructions

1) Go to the voting page (http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/shelterchallenge)
1) In the search box, enter The Animal Shelter and select AL.
2) When the results appear, click on Vote next to our name.
3) Be sure to identify the animal on the security page that follows!

Tick Attack! Help us fight some uggie buggies!

Spring has officially arrived - according to the number of ticks, fleas, flies and mosquitoes attacking our shelter dogs! There are some long-term plans in the works to get those pests where they live, but right now our dogs need relief!

Can you help by sending some Frontline Plus or K9 Advantix our way? There are several ways to help:
- bring some by the shelter at 1201 Parkwood Drive (perhaps you've switched from one brand to another and have leftovers? We'll take 'em!).
- if you have it in your heart and your wallet, provide us with a new box (click here for a great sale on Advantix!). The biggest size is always in demand, but we'll accept anything you can afford to send!
- go to our Sponsorships page and donate toward the "Kick the Ticks" fund.

Thank you for thinking of our animals during this challenging time of year!

Meet Keyta!

How is it possible that a lady with this much pizzazz is still at the shelter? Keyta has an infectious personality! She loves to tussle with other dogs but when it comes to snuggle time, she is first in line (even if she has to push her way up there!). Full of herself and full of life - that's Keyta! Many people have considered Keyta, but nobody has come through. Can you or someone you know commit to this charmer?

Keyta is a Featured dog. With an intake year of 2007, she has been waiting at the shelter much longer than she deserves. A donor is sponsoring 1/2 the adoption fee to help Keyta find the right home.

Can you help T.J.?

TJ is the sweetest girl. Her gentle and snuggly nature have won over the staff. Sadly, she tested positive for heartworm. Money is tight, but we want to help this girl. Any amount you give will be a lifeline for TJ! Please visit her fundraiser if you are able to help: TJ Needs Heartworm Treatment!

Meet Lovey!

Lovey arrived at the shelter in a state of extreme confusion. She could not understand where her family had gone, and huddled whimpering in the kennel. She is hugely people-oriented and will melt against you when you love on her. Lovely will politely exchange kisses as well. This loving dog is just waiting for someone to love her back. She is outside in kennel 14.

Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to get adopted? Our Hearts of Gold program is designed to highlight how beautiful they truly are. Can you open your heart to one of these golden dogs?

Meet Sammy!

Sammy is a super-adorable Beagle gent. Although he has a little grizzle on his muzzle, landing him in our group of Mature dogs, Sammy is still full of spunk and affection! He will run right over to get some attention. Do you know someone who needs some Sammy Sunshine in their life? Sammy is waiting at The Animal Shelter!

Mature dogs make excellent pets! Calmer than those younger hooligans, these older pups usually also have better housemanners and are especially appreciative of getting a good forever home to retire in (or start that second childhood!). Won't you consider a Mature pet?

The Great Spring Clean-up!

We have accumulated a lot of "stuff" packed here, there, and everywhere at the shelter. In the spirit of Spring Cleaning, we've decided it is time to clear it out!

Join us on Saturday, April 18th between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. as we bag it up and haul it off! (It's free day at the county landfill.)

Even if you can only join us for an hour or two, we and our animals will appreciate your help in making the shelter a cleaner, safer environment.

What to bring: A good work ethnic, work gloves and grungy clothes, and if you have a pickup truck to take a load to the landfill, that would be great!

Who to contact: Angie (call 256-236-1581 or email ashelter@bellsouth.net)
