Dixie Dogs Go North to Find Homes

We prepare to depart 2009 with a Happy Tail and a sign of what 2010 holds:


In early December, 5 Shelter dogs boarded a van operated by Semper Fi Rescue. Their destination: Massachusetts! These dogs were the first ones sent by The Animal Shelter to Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society as part of their Dixie Dogs program.



Ben, Goldie, Houston, Margie, and Rabbit made it safely to their destination, and were immediately assessed as adoption-ready, proving what wonderful dogs we have here in the South! We would love to show you all their pictures at Dakin, but we can't - Goldie, Houston, Margie, and Rabbit were all adopted in their first week! Ben is still awaiting his Northern home, but given his winning smile in his pic, we know his family will find him soon:



Dakin is accepting 5 dogs each run, 2 run per month - a total of 120 precious lives transferred for Northern adoption each year!

You can help!

To qualify for interstate transport, the chosen dogs must be quarantined for 2 weeks prior to travel. The Animal Shelter is in need of pea gravel for the quarantine yard to keep these pups healthy and ready to go! If you can set us up with some gravel, you will be an important part in rescuing these lives. These Dogs Want a Happier New Year

Our wonderful ONE Club dogs, shown below, have spent all of 2009 at the shelter waiting for an adopter who never came.

It takes an extraordinary dog to remain loving and healthy in a kennel environment, and it takes an exceptional adopter to recognize how wonderful our long-term residents really are. They may take a little longer to learn their house manners, but they have so much love and appreciation to give in return.

In the spirit of the holidays, we have a number of ways you can help The Animal Shelter while helping yourself:

Charms at Couch's! Delight the animal lovers on your gift list with a dog or cat charm from Couch's Jewelers! The charms will be available at the Anniston location today (Dec 9) through Friday (Dec 11) and at the Oxford Exchange location on Saturday (Dec 12). Warm the hearts of your gift recipients by letting them know that proceeds benefit The Animal Shelter, The League for Animal Welfare, and SAVE!

Pet Photos with Santa! Monday, Dec 14 will be your last chance to get professional photos of your pet with Santa. Bring your pet to Quintard Mall between 5 and 8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds benefits the shelter.

Vote for our Tree! Now through December 20, make sure you go to guest services and place a vote for our Christmas tree every time you visit Quintard Mall. We could win a cash prize! (How do you benefit? You get to see our beautiful tree! The ladies do such a wonderful job every year. You also have another excuse for stopping by the mall :)

Meet Big Momma!

Big Momma is the beagle lover's beagle! She has all those classic beagle characteristics of loving people, loving attention from people, loving food, loving scents more than anything in the universe with the exception, perhaps, of super stinky food (click here to read about beagles from people who know beagles!).

Big Momma also has some things that make her unique. She must be an only dog. She was badly attacked and traumatized by another dog and now would rather not be around them, thank you very much! She may also be a little too opinionated for a home with young children. She had a large litter of pups, and she definitely knows how to say NO! to pesky youngsters.

If you have a home free of dogs and small children, but full of adult attention and good things to sniff, please consider Big Momma!

Meet Mandy!

Here on the final day of Adopt-a-Senior-Pet month, we have another super senior to introduce to you! Mandy is a basset hound treasure. It is so easy to sit quietly with Mandy and stroke her. She deserves attention and knows it - she'll hit you with a dose of doggy guilt when you stop! And lest you think she's "all washed up" - Mandy took a happy trot across the yard (this despite horribly neglected nails that make it impossible for her to walk normally - they are being trimmed back very slowly).

Cara is a sweetheart, but the shelter environment has become overwhelming for her and she has become skittish. When she first arrived, she was always asking for lap-time and cuddles. However, she has been at the shelter for over one year without a person to call her own. She has become withdrawn and sad.

Faith is a wonderful girl! With her houndy head (that at certain angles looks Boster Terrier!), furry coat and spotted coloring, her breed combination is anyone's guess. But it sure is a winning combination. Faith does well with dogs of all sorts of temperaments, and she soaks up attention. The only thing Faith is lacking is a home.

Meet Patti!

Someone has made a horrible mistake in not adopting our Miss Patti yet. Patti is a hoot! She is super social with people and with other dogs, loves playing, smiles constantly, and will keep you in stitches with her overall goofiness. She's on the small side of "medium" but she can definitely put on some speed, so somewhere to run is essential. She is a bit of a chow hound...ahem...so needs a little diet, and she's been at the shelter since she was a young pup, so she'll need someone loving and patient enough to explain "house manners" to her. But she'd love to learn, and she'd love to make your life happy!

Meet Jake!

Jake is such a snuggly bundle of cute, it is hard to imagine that he's been waiting at the shelter since he was a puppy. It might be that his kennel behavior is misleading - he jumps for joy at the prospect of going outside. But get him outside, and you'll find a calm, sweet, submissive and sometimes silly boy! Happy news! Fern, who took over "longest-term resident" status after Keyta recently found home, has been adopted! Fern is a sweet, sensitive girl who needed just the right place, and it sounds like she's found it - yay Fern!

Fern is ceding her spot to TYKE - a true guy, Tyke is a self-sufficient bachelor who likes to be outside and will hang out with you without being at all needy.

Today we are asking you to not just meet Sonny, but to help us help him. Sonny is a very handsome Springer/Border Collie mix - as you can see! But Sonny is having an extremely hard time in the shelter environment - he is very stressed out.

We are anxious to find a different environment for Sonny where he can relax and thrive - ideally a new home, of course! But a rescue or a foster would be great as well. Contest for the Kids

Do you have a creative writer in your home who wants to help shelter animals? Are you a Scout leader looking for a great project? Young people ages 7-18 can enter the 1st Kibble Krusader Kontest. Entry deadline is Sunday, September 27.

On Monday, September 28, we will choose 5 winning entries and $1,000.00 of Halo Dinner Party Salmon or Beef Sprinkle Treats will be shipped right to the door of EACH of the winners local shelters!
