Meet Te!

Te is looking for a better life the second time around. Te came into the shelter skin and bones, with evidence of having been kept outdoors without the love and attention she deserved. She is a tall but narrow, athletic girl who loves to have fun! She is somewhat leery of guys, but she could be won over we're sure. Can you show Te "the good life?"

Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to get adopted? Our Hearts of Gold program is designed to highlight how beautiful they truly are. Can you open your heart to one of these golden dogs?

Meet Barney!

Barney is a good guy needing a good home. He is an adult lab with a touch of something furry mixed in ;) He loves compliments and is something of a ladies man! Barney has impaired vision in one eye, so we don't recommend he go to a home with young kids or young dogs who may startle him.

Happy Day for Keyta!

You read that right! After 26 months at the shelter, Keyta's long-awaited family has found her at last!

And what a turn of luck it is. Keyta will be living on a farm outside Birmingham, with two kids and another dog to give her all the love and fun she has been craving.

Congratulations to Keyta, and "thank you!" to her adopters. May you have a wonderful life together.

Help an Elderly Lab

This week, we would like you to meet a newcomer to the shelter. We are hoping this sweet older lab can find a home or a rescue situation without having to spend much time at the shelter. This lab has some hound in her soul, as she loves to spend time outside with her nose to the ground, taking in all the smells. She will enjoy just hanging out with a friend. Please help us find a place where she will be pampered and treasured.

This girl has some hair thinning that may indicate a thyroid condition, as happens to many older retrievers. Thyroid issues can be corrected with medication.

Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day

The shelter will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday! Please help us spread the word about this special day, and about our special pets waiting for homes!

Petfinder.com, the nation’s largest Internet database of adoptable animals, has declared August 12 “Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day” to bring attention to those pets that, through no fault of their own, have a hard time getting adopted. Shelters across the United States agree, homeless animals that are older, have physical flaws, or have plain, dark coats have it hard. The Animal Shelter has created three “clubs” to bring attention to these neglected groups.

“Special Editions” are special animals needing special homes. They are dogs like Boone, an elderly beagle looking for a quiet retirement, Barney, a mature retriever with a cataract in one eye, and Maizy, a three-legged Vizsla mix with a passion for playing fetch and speaking her mind. These animals don’t notice their imperfections and are waiting for adopters who only notice their inner beauty.

“Hearts of Gold” are friendly, fun-loving animals with one disadvantage: they have dark coats. They are dogs like Lovey, a shepherd mix who wants to be a lap dog, and Thelma, a fun youngster who desperately wants a playmate. These animals deserve homes as much as their more colorful kennelmates, if only adopters could see past their dark coats and into their golden hearts.

“The One Club” includes dogs that have been looking for homes for over one year. Despite their wonderful personalities, Keyta, Fern, Tyke, Carly, Babs, Thurman, and Shasta somehow have not yet been adopted. These dogs are patiently waiting for adopters who will in turn patiently reintroduce them to life in a home. They have over one year of stored up love to offer in return.

Look for special cards on the kennels of these “Less Adoptable” pets and ask to meet them. You may just find a treasure that others have overlooked.

Meet Blu!

BLU is a gorgeous cattle dog mix girl. She is very attentive and focused, and is looking for someone who will give her something constructive to do. She is fine with other dogs, but really prefers having ALL the attention for herself!
