The Calhoun County Humane Society (DBA "The Animal Shelter") holds healthy, friendly animals well beyond the legal holding period in hopes of finding them new homes. We rely on donations and volunteers. We need you!
TJ, that beautiful snuggly pitty girl, is scheduled for her first heartworm treatment on July 15th!
We are excited for TJ, but worried about the high number of dogs coming to the shelter with heartworm. Heartworm is preventable through monthly medication. Read more at our site, and help spread the word about the importance of heartworm prevention!

MARILYN is a burst of energy and sunshine! She is a fun friendly girl who will do well with an active family or as a companion to an active dog. How anyone can resist that goofy grin or her love-the-world attitude is beyond us!
Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to get adopted? Our Hearts of Gold program is designed to highlight how beautiful they truly are. Can you open your heart to one of these golden dogs?
We made it! Our $10,000 goal for the ChipIn campaign has been met! Thank you to every single one of the 199 people who contributed to this ChipIn. Large or small, your contribution made a difference in the lives of this shelter and all the animals staying there until they find their forever home. (The Campaign continues through the end of June, if you still want to give please visit our home page!)
We invite you to remain friends of The Animal Shelter, the shelter YOU helped save:
Thanks to the kindness of you donors, we have been very busy the last few days. It is time to deliver some good news!
Gas: being hooked back up! Water: remaining on! Power: paid in full by the Anniston Medical Clinic!
In addition to our online friends, people have dropped in, mailed checks, and offered to host fundraisers. We are so grateful - there is hope on the horizon!
Thurman looks like mini Saint Bernard! He's really pretty small (40lbs?) - perfect for any home. He's a good natured guy who is fine with other dogs as mannerly as himself. Very laid back and definitely wants to be a house dog, he is so very sad about being outside.
Thurman is a member of The ONE Club - he's been looking for "the one" for over 1 year. Isn't it time he found home?
Thank you so much everyone - the first $5,000 donation has been met! The matching funds are on their way from the donor, who says Opal is overjoyed! (see her and Shelter foster dog Erin goofing off below).
Our community has really come forward to get the word out about the shelter's need. Check out the following (in date order); we are also grateful to 97.9 and Thunder radio stations for their air time. And of course to all of you who have spread the word!
In response to the call, another donor has stepped forward with a $5,000 match. That means all donations up to $10,000 will be matched! We are blessed by our Anniston area and online communities - thank you!
As you may have seen in the media recently, the economy is taking its toll on the shelter. But there's good news!
To help the shelter through these hard times, a past adopter has offered to match all donations in the month of June, up to $5,000 total! There are many ways you can help the shelter take advantage of this offer:
#1 Give: Perhaps you have a few dollars sitting, or you can skip one lunch this month or that special indulgence, and instead send those dollars to the shelter. Go to the Campaign page to Chip In (ChipIn forwards donations to our Paypal account and is secure)
#2 Organize a Group Gift: Perhaps you only have $2 sitting, but you know 20 people (think co-workers, Bible study, or your social club) who also have $2 sitting. Organize a group Giving Day. Together, your $2, and someone else’s $5, and another’s $1, can add up to something great!
#3 Spread the Word: Maybe you write for a newsletter. Or you know someone who’s been looking for a good cause. Is there a posting board at your grocery store or church? Hang a flyer! (Download our MS Word flyer)
#4 Add a Widget: If you have a Web site, blog, or social networking page, you can copy the widget on our ChipIn page and post it on your site.
#5 Keep Voting: What’s better than free money? The Shelter+ Challenge voting has been going great! Let’s keep it up and see what we can accomplish together!
#6 Share Your Ideas: Has something different worked for you or another group in the past? Know of another way to get help? Have a good suggestion to share? Send an email!
We don't understand why wonderful Sasha has yet to find home - she has been waiting for so very long. She is a fun and loving girl who enjoys a good time and good friends. She'll give you great companionship and make you smile! She is also wonderful with other dogs. Shasha is perfectly sized at around 30lbs.
SASHA is a Featured dog. With an intake year of 2007, these dogs have been waiting at the shelter much longer than they deserve. A donor is sponsoring 1/2 the adoption fee to help them find the right home. Could it be yours?
