Featured Dogs

There are no anniversary dogs this month - it's true! - BUT we have a very special duo to introduce to you. SHADOW and MERLIN have been at the shelter for a very long time. Maybe their good manners just don't make them stand out? This pair is among the most laid-back, easy guys we have to offer! Please come give these guys a chance!

MERLIN definitely has one of those Japanese "Inu" breeds in his veins! He comes off at first as aloof like an "Inu," but that's just his calm style. He is just so well behaved ~ never jumping up, coming whenever called, and very tidy and clean. But don't think he is going to lie around all day - he and Shadow love a little rough-n-tumble play! They are adorable, and Merlin even proves he has a bark at play time!

SHADOW has been Merlin's buddy their entire stay. As a sight hound, he also seems a little detached at first. But he is quite the sensitive guy, and develops a strong bond with people he knows and loves. Though he likes to stretch his legs - and looks so elegant doing it! - he is also mannerly and calm by nature. He and Merlin are adorable when they play, like a pair of puppies!

PUPPY FOSTERS! 2 WEEKS ONLY!!

It's OK, you can admit it - you love puppies, but only in moderation. Have we got the opportunity for you!! Our next batch of puppies is going to Atlanta Humane Society on August 24 - they need to be out of the shelter by August 14. You love them and care for them for 10-14 days, then you kiss them bye! as they head for their new lives! Interested? New volunteers, fill out an adoption application. Diana is a most special girl. She is friendly, self-assured, and clever. She loves to interact and entertain. Perhaps her best talent is for making the new cats in the condo welcome - she has turned many a skittish newcomer into a calm and friendly kitty.

Despite her many virtues, Diana has been waiting over a year for her own home.

Anniversary Dogs

Think Black Dog Syndrome - the phenonenon of black-coated dogs being passed over for adoption - only applies to large dogs? Think again. This month we highlight two of our small dogs who are facing their 1-year anniversary at the shelter. Small dogs rarely have trouble finding homes, yet these two still wait. The one thing they have in common? Their black coats.

DILLINGER was a rogue out on his own prior to coming to the shelter and taking over the small dog room. Dilly is quite the character, full of zest! He will throw himself into your lap, but squirm so badly that he falls back out of it! He is active, playful, quite humorous, and well overdue for a home.

Comparing NANCY to Dillinger...well, there is no comparison! They are a study in opposites. Nancy is such a loving Miss, and when held will just relax into your arms and settle in for the long haul. There is no other place she would rather be! Nancy can be enticed to play, or she is quite content to just hang out. She won't take guff from younger dogs, but is very proper about telling them to give her space. Her long wait for a home is a total mystery.

ROWDY is another Black Dog Syndrome victim, marking his 2-year anniversary this month. Despite his long time here, Rowdy is such a happy guy! He greets all with a smile, and he's gotten along great with his many kennel mates over time. Although he's got some energy, Rowdy also adores sitting on your foot and gazing at you with adoration. Who wouldn't love that??

Summer is a harsh time at shelters, with a spike in the number of strays and surrenders due to vacation season, fireworks, and abandoned puppies. Our list of anniversary dogs for July is long. Please give these wonderful dogs a look and...if one is a match for you...a home!

2 Ways 2 Help!!

Love puppies, but only in moderation? Have we got the program for you! We now have a Puppy Foster Program! We need folks who enjoy puppy love, puppy breath, puppy kisses (and who don't mind puppy piddles) to keep a couple pups for 2 weeks at a time until they go to the Atlanta Humane Society for adoption! The need is for 2 weeks every month. Can't help every month? That's okay - please still sign up! (Existing volunteers - please send Shelly an email.) You'll get word of when the next group is ready, and can take pups as you are able. This wonderful program will ensure more babies are adopted out and not growing up in a kennel.

Did you get storm damage? We did! Our barn, completed fall 2009 with volunteer power, had the entire southside roofing over the kennels ripped off! The kennels are now open to the weather. We need cheap or donated corrugated metal roofing, and some help putting it up. Can you help? Please contact the shelter (ashelter@bellsouth.net).

Small Dogs in the Big City

LJ spies an urban future

Today marked the beginning of exciting times for 12 of The Animal Shelter's small dogs and puppies! These little ones are embarking on new lives in Hotlanta as part of a new partnership between the shelter and the Atlanta Humane Society.

The math is simple: The Animal Shelter has more small dogs and puppies than we can readily place; AHS has a continous demand for the little ones.

A 95-mile drive is all that separated these dogs from being one of many to the rare jewels we know them to be.

What to do?

Climb in the van.

Board and staff members happily readied and loaded up their charges for their adventure, trucking them across state line and time line (the dogs need to reset their internal clocks to Eastern!).

Waiting for Check-in

Each new city-slicker waited their turn to be checked over and checked in. After spay/neuter, they are up for adoption!

Be Part of the Excitement!

Up to 20 of our unadopted little ones can transfer to AHS on a monthly basis! The puppies need to be fostered for 2 weeks before their trip. Think about it - 2 weeks of puppy love! Yet no worrying about the chewing, or housetraining, or leash training to come. Can you foster puppies for a 2-week period? Please submit a volunteer application!! You will then receive further instructions on program requirements.

Anniversary Dogs

These wonderful girls are facing their 1-year anniversary in the shelter. The best anniversary present for them would be a HOME!

BELLA - There is nothing cuter than a short-legged lab! And could those eyes be any more gorgeous?? We think not. Bella the Bassalab is a lovely, mild-mannered miss. She is a cuddler with a frisky side. Sweet and silly is as wonderful combination as short and labby! Come get to know BELLA!

TRIXIE is too polite for her own good. Pushed to the back while her more confident kennelmates hog the attention, this shy violet never gets her time to shine. She is a dainty girl, easy to hold and stroke, which is all she really wants. Come give Trixie some cuddle time!

Anniversary Dogs

These wonderful girls are facing their 1-year anniversary in the shelter. The best anniversary present for them would be a HOME!

ADDIE - beautiful, fun, well-mannered, and great with other dogs. Addie has it all - except a home! She has a shiny coat and an equally shiny personality. Please come get to know Addie.

HONEYBUN is putting on her best pleading look, pleading for a home at last. Honeybun was left on her own to have puppies at a very young age. She is so ready for her homeless days to end and a pampered life to begin! She has a terrier's attitude toward like-sized dogs but has done well with big dogs. Can you give her a life on easy streeet?

SASHA says a Feist ought to be FUN! Sasha loves to chase the toys and race with the toys and have a great time with the toys. Got the message? Sasha likes toys! Sasha also like hugs :) She is on the small side, too, so no trouble at all.

May 1-7: Cutest Pet Photo Contest

The Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County is teaming up with the Anniston Animal Shelter May 1 - May 7 for National Pet Month by conducting a "Cutest Cat" and "Cutest Dog" contest. Bring a picture of your pet to the library and make a donation (monetary or one of the items the shelter needs: bleach, blankets/linens, cat litter, cat or dog food, etc.) to enter. Winner will receive a gift basket. Even if you don't have a pet, a donation to suppor the Animal Shelter is appreciated!

May 20: Cupcakes for Critters

Cupcakes for Critters, Friday, May 20th, 24 Sunset Drive, Anniston, AL. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join the fun, savor the homemade cupcakes, sip the scrumptious beverages, commune with like-minded, caring folks, while enjoying the vibrant gardens and calming nature trail. Raffles and donations accepted. No charge but a $5 donation is suggested. All proceeds fund SAVE's Calhoun County spay neuter fund to assist low income families in altering their pets.

1Way2Help: Kitten Fosters

We need foster homes ready to take in kittens that need to be bottle raised. You must be ready to take them as soon as they come into the shelter. These babies will need to be fed every 2 hours round the clock. Please email Leigh-Anne if you are interested in taking on this task and to discuss details and any questions you may have.

(It would also be nice to have foster homes for moms that come in pregnant or with kittens. The kittens have a better chance of survival if raised in a home.)

2nd ANNIVERSARY

OBIE! How is it possibly Obie's 2-yr anniversary? Obie is such a great dog! He is moderation in all things. He plays nicely, walks nicely, is great with other dogs and with kids. He is quite dashing. He learns super fast! Obie is birdy - he hones in on those flying critters! But he's a pointer...he's supposed to! In other words, Obie does everything "just right."

A Pet-friendly Legislative Session?

Alabama companion animals have a few champions in this session - but with a host of bills, the question is which of their bills will make it through committee and be put to a vote. Here's a peek at some of the things that might happen for Alabama pets this year:

HB 115 - strenghtening dogfighting laws
An important feature of this bill for shelters is that it allows a judge to order the owner of dogs seized in a dogfighting investigation to post bond for the cost of care of the dogs. This will provide huge financial relief for shelters that house fighting dogs in criminal cases. The bill also provides a mechanism for civil forfeiture so that animals do not need to be housed as evidence until the case is heard, which can take 1-2 years.

This bill will be heard on March 9 by the House Agriculture and Forestry Commission. (If your rep is on this committee, you can voice your support. Please see the committee member listing below.)

HB 174 - Beckham's Bill to end the use of gas chambers
SB 13 - would require adding bittering agents to antifreeze to make it less appealing to pets and children
SB 27 - would add a check-off on tax returns to donate to the ALVMA Foundation spay-neuter fund

Fleas and Ticks and Mosquitoes, oh my!

Spring temperatures have made an early appearance in the Southeast, and with them come spring pests! More than just annoying, these bugs present health risks to our pets:

FLEAS: These little blood drinkers do more than cause an itch. They carry tapeworms, which set up shop in the intestines. Treatment for tapeworms is effecient, but better to not put your pet's system through a worm invasion and treatment. Some dogs are also very allergic to fleas and will suffer hair loss that usually starts in the hindquarters. They suffer miserably from the constant itch. A severe flea infestation can cause anemia, especially in puppies/kittens, cats, and small dogs.

TICKS: Ticks carry harmful diseases, including lyme disease and tick ehrlichia.

MOSQUITOES: This pest carries the scariest and deadliest threat to our pets: heartworms. Heartworm disease is tragically common in the Southeast. They infest first the lungs, and eventually the heart of the host, causing a horrible death. Treatment can be dangerous and expensive, moreso as the disease progresses. Symptoms often don't appear until damage has been done. Prevention is simple: a monthly pill (the manufacturers will even send you a monthly email reminder! How simple is that?).

A Chance for Change

Grace - survived a GA gas chamber
and inspired "Grace's Law"

ALABAMA VOTERS, are you aware that the upcoming legislative session offers a chance to end a major form of institutionalized animal cruelty in Alabama? A bill to ban gas chambers, Beckham’s Bill (named for a pup rescued from an Alabama gas chamber moments before he was to be destroyed) will be introduced by Sen. Del Marsh and Rep. Steve McMillan. Several other legislators are co-sponsoring the bill. It is based on Grace's Law, which banned gas chambers in Georgia starting Jan 1, 2011.

As a Humane Society, our hope is for every homeless dog and cat to find a permanent home. But the sad reality right now is that over 100,000 dogs and cats in Alabama animal control facilities each year do not make it into homes. In some towns and counties, these animals face death in a gas chamber.

Animals put to death by gassing suffocate slowly; they fight each other as they begin to panic; they lose bodily functions and have convulsions during the 30 mintues to 40 minutes it takes to die. Learn more here

February Anniversary Dogs

1st ANNIVERSARY

LIZ must be wondering where all the fun families that want a playmate have gone??? She is such a wonderful, sweet and playful girl. She must be suffering from "plain brown dog" syndrome, which is a crying shame because some wonderful family is missing out on their wonderful dog!

Liz does well with other dogs in just about every way, except she does need them to stay away from her food. ROXIE seems far too cute to have been a shelter resident for a full year but sure enough...it says right there on her papers that she came to the shelter last February! It is hard to say what Roxie might be a mix of, but she sure is CUTE!

2nd ANNIVERSARY: MAIZY

MAIZY is proof positive that a 3-legged dog is just as much fun as a 4-legged one! She came to the shelter with an amputation, so it was quite surprising that she never got reclaimed. Maizy is an active girl who loves to play with toys and her dog friends!

If Maizy has a vice, it is that she has a big bark. She barks at unfamiliar dogs, she barks to play, she barks at men until she knows them (she is submissively afraid of most men). Maybe that bark has kept Maizy from finding her home, but it shouldn't! 3rd ANNIVERSARY: CARLY

Well now here is a story that is just baffling. The stunning CARLY was born at the shelter in February 2008 along with her sister Connie. Don't think puppies always get adopted, because neither of these girls did! Connie finally did get adopted as a youngster, leaving her sister behind.

Carly is quite the amazing girl. She is social, funny, and playful. The staff have done a GREAT job raising her into a GREAT dog! She is energetic, yet after playing she will settle in for snuggles. While she's a bit picky about other dogs, she and Tyke have been rooming together just fine. There is just no reason for this girl to not be someone's amazing playmate and friend! February's Fabulous Feline

SKINNY MINNIE has been at the shelter far longer than she deserves! One of the first cats photographed back in June 2010, the reason for her name was clear - she was practically transparant! She was also quite the talker, demanding attention!

Minnie is not quite as Skinny now - only thin as a rail ;) (She's not anorexic, she's just born that way!). And she's not nearly as chatty. But she is still as wanting and deserving of attention! She is a sweetheart who is careful with her claws and does well with the other cats. Its time for her home!

1 Way 2 Help: Got Linens?

Everybody likes to snuggle up in something soft! Many places like Goodwill won't take old linens, but we sure will! We can be creative, too. Sheets, pillow cases, towels, wash cloths, place mats, baby blankets, small throw rugs and toilet seat covers, etc. ~ anything cloth that can be laid flat in a kennel to make comfortable bedding! These goods lead a hard, short life with frequent washings in hot water and bleach, and of course sometimes the pups are just in the mood to chew and tear. So we can always use more!

Newspaper is also always in demand! You don't have to think big or spend much to provide our pets with some love and comfort.

Seriously? TRAPPER is surely FAR too cute to be waiting for a year, you might think. But he has been!

Trapper is like a portable German Shepherd - in the 30# range. He is a calm dog...unless you invite him to "get silly" with you. Then the adorable burst of cute you see to your left will come out! He is an adorable tease of a guy. Does well with most other dogs, and we can't imagine mannerly kids would be a problem. Bring the family out to meet TRAPPER!

It's BEAGLE!!! Yup, Beagle is just that exciting! You might think all beagles are a bit stubborn, and much more interested in sniffing the planet than being your best buddy. Not our Beagle!

Peanut is the kind of guy who would do well anywhere. He's laid back, he's adaptable, he doesn't cause trouble. He'll play a bit, but mostly he'll just be there for you. He gets along with other dogs just great! Having been in a shelter so long, he'll need an adjustment period. But he's worth that! He's a perfect house-dog size in the 30# range. Just in case you were wondering - no, you didn't read it wrong. TYKE came to the shelter in January 2008. As the generic "big brown dog," Tyke has been overlooked month after month, year after year.

At this point, Tyke is gonna need somebody as super special as he is. He can be a skeptic with unfamiliar people. It has been a while since he has been out in the "real world." Helping Neighbors, Helping Pets

It is New Year's Resolution time!

Part II

There are so many ways you can take just one action to make life better for animals this new year, that this week's blog is a Part II!

Here are some ideas for helping animals in your own community. Keeping pets in their own safe and loving homes is the best option of them all!

Offer to drive an elderly or limited-mobility neighbor's pet to veterinary appointments.
Offer to walk the dog for an eldery or limited-mobility neighbor (this is a good community service project for a responsible teen).
Sponsor a spay/neuter for a low-income person and offer to bring the pet to the transport (S.A.V.E.) .
Donate a bag of pet food to someone in need. People who won't accept "hand outs" for themselves may still accept help for their animals.
Provide clean, fresh straw or hay for an outdoor dog's house.
Do you know of a dog on a chain? Offer to help put up a trolley, kennel, or fence. (Tips)

And one last thing you can do to improve the life of your own dog:

Play with and train your dog! So many dogs are abandoned due to "behavior issues" that would never have developed if they had been exercised adequately and trained at the appropriate age. It is NEVER too late to train your dog to be a Canine Good Citizen. Then you can enjoy a lifetime together in peace and harmony. 2 Former Fosters Want New Homes 4 the New Year

We have two absolutely wonderful dogs who were in foster but are now back at the shelter. They have learned their house manners and have incredible temperaments. Both would very much like to be back in a home as quickly as possible. They are medium in size (probably in the 35-40 lb range), young ladies of 2 - 2 1/2 years old.

First we have Eva, a gorgeous cattle dog mix with the best, most even temperament. Eva finds the kennel environment stressful, and her coat gets rough in a hurry. It would be so wonderful for sweet Eva to get right back into a home like she deserves. Read more about Eva on Petfinder:

Meet Patches!

PATCHES is a quiet little guy. Perhaps too quiet? Our smaller dogs usually have an easier time finding a home. Patches has been overlooked for a year! He needs you to make some noise and get him a home for the holidays!

Patches is such a handsome fella. He is a calm dog who is content to hang out and watch the scenery at the side of a good friend. You can't really tell in the photos, but he's a pretty little guy, so a great fit for the home. He will make a fantastic companion for a quiet home or perhaps a retired person needing a good friend.

Meet Baby!

Someone is really missing out on a doggie treasure by not adopting BABY!

Baby is all-around fantastic. She is great about exploring her environment, coming at a run to be with you, soaking up loving, paying attention to every word you speak, and just being a great dog in every way. She has the best smile, which is sure to make you smile! She has a thick build (a bit too thick - a diet wouldn't hurt ;) but is pretty short and will be a great fit for most any home.

She is great with dogs, we can't imagine she'd be anything but great with kids, and is just in all ways wonderful. Make your holidays brighter by bringing Baby into your home!

'Tis the Season!

Can you believe it is December 1 already?

Well, there is no denying it - the holiday season is upon us and winter is giving us a preview.

As you think about the holidays, please think about our animals who don't have a home to celebrate in.

There are many ways to help homeless pets this season of warmth and giving:

Adopt early - visit us at PetSmart this Saturday!

Don't wait for the hectic holiday to choose a new family member. Meet our wonderful pets before the pressure is on. Make the best choice for your family, and allow time for your new friend to settle in before the chaos descends. Our dogs are visiting Oxford Exchange PetSmart from 11-2 Saturday 12/4. Our kitties are always there!

Volunteer!

Do you have some extra time off during the holidays? Check with the shelter on how you can give a day of service this season.

Give a gift basket!

Everybody likes something special for the holidays, including our animals. Things they enjoy include treats, durable chew and chase toys (doggies), things to bat around (kitties), things to snuggle up in, and last but not least - visitors to pat and play with them! Call ahead so our staff know to look for you!

Meet Clapton!

Here is a puzzle for you - how does a dog this cute, friendly, and goofy wind up at a shelter for over 1 year??

CLAPTON was adopted straight off as a baby over 1 year ago, but was sadly brought back for not getting along with the resident dog. We feel that it must have been the resident dog that did not get along with Clapton. He is just a big goober boy, playful and silly and fun! While Clapton can be a bit much for some dogs, he is not at all mean with them. He might run over them during play...but its all in fun ;) He loves to romp, will share his toys, and has no trouble over food.

Clapton is great with kids! A frequent PetSmart visitor, he has been buried in kids and not minded. He knows how to sit and shake hands and can learn plenty more.

One Kennel, Three Good Girls, Lotsa Love!

These three beautiful girls have been sharing a kennel since they arrived nearly one year ago. They are each absolutely wonderful, and sure to make for a happy home.

GRACIE is the stately tan and black motherly type. She is a calm girl who takes pleasure in being by your side and helping you with whatever you may be doing.

PEPPER is of the "sit on your foot and give you loving stares" school! Who wouldn't want that kind of love? She has the pretty coloring of an Akita in a smaller size and more social personality.

SASHA has the best ears in the building, and a silly spotty tongue just to add to the cute! She was so shy and sad when she first came as a recent momma. Relieved of her mothing duties, her adorable goofy personality came bursting out! She will share all your inside jokes (and never tell) and return your smiles.

If you've been missing some love in your life, one of these three girls is just waiting to provide it!

Meet Shadow and Merlin!

Shadow and Merlin:

Two Nice Gentlemen Seek Nice Homes

SHADOW and MERLIN arrived at about the same time a year ago, and have been kennel buddies ever since. These boys have the best dispositions.

Shadow, the brindle sighthound and/or Doberman mix, was a little aloof when he first came. He has really come around and become affectionate and eager for attention. He is a laid-back guy, but when he does run and play is so handsome and graceful!

Merlin is a mature, sensible kind of guy, and that's a very good thing! It is such a pleasure to be around a dog who just wouldn't imagine being any trouble. He is just easy and responsive, happy to go off on his own if you want or to hang out for a chat. Merlin in particular is very tidy, so either he is housetrained or would learn quickly.

It seems there just aren't any families out there looking for fine gentlemen such as these - they are facing their 1-year anniversary at the shelter. They would sure rather spend this holiday in a home. If you are looking for a nice gentleman, but didn't know where to look, please come look at Merlin or Shadow! [Merlin and Shadow are not bonded and do not need to stay together.]

Meet Otis!

OTIS is a great Golden Retriever mix boy! He is a people-loving fella, laid back, walks well on leash, and just has family dog written all over him.

In his pictures it may look like Otis is two different dogs :) That's because in the top picture he is wearing his wooly winter coat. Below you'll see his sleek summer 'do. That means you'll have to really brush out Otis twice a year to help his change of coat. He's great about handling and won't give you any trouble about it.

Got sensitive documents and don't know how to get rid of them? Did you let the "shred it" pile get too big? How about at the office?

‎"Shred Your Papers for the Shelter" will be from 8 a.m. -1 p.m. at Action Industries, 1630 Coleman Road behind Lamar's Donuts. Check out Sunday's paper in News You Can Use. For a donation of a 10 pound bag of dog or cat food or kitty litter you can have up to 8 boxes of papers destroyed. What a great way to get rid of papers and help our animals in need. Lamar's donuts and coffee will be served!

Meet Zippy!

It's Adopt-a-Dog Month: Please consider adopting Zippy!

ZIPPY has so much going for her! A chameleon, she adapts herself to the moment. Inside, she is a calm girl happy to snuggle and get belly rubs. Outside with other dogs, she is a party girl! Zippy loves to learn and takes very quickly to training. She would excel at things like Rally Obedience, trick training, or other fun stuff that allows her to use her very impressive brain. She is tidy, so if she isn't already housetrained she soon will be. She does well with kids.

Zippy has a few special Zippy characteristics. She can climb chain link, she can't be trusted with cats, and she doesn't like dogs with shaggy/long fur. Hey, we all have our preferences.

CHARLIE has been waiting patiently for her Blog Dog of the Week spot. That's just the type of dog she is - easy, sweet, patient and loving. Although she has border collie good looks, she is bigger and calmer than a border collie. There may be some giant breed genes in there mellowing her out. Charlie has her active moments, but what she really lives for is to make you happy by having her at your side! She is very people-oriented and ready for a great life hanging out with family.

Seniors are Super (not "less adoptable"!)

This week is Petfinder.com's "Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet" Week, created to call attention to animals that get left behind for many reasons or reasons unknown. By a large margin, the highest number of animals are passed over for adoption because they are older/seniors.

MACK is here to tell everyone why seniors are super! Seniors, he says, simply can't outrun you with the zest and skill that the youngters have. In fact, he doesn't even bother. He will sit right at your feet! (Or even on them.)

He will not demand that you potty train him (altho a brief refresher course might be in order), watch him every single second in case he gets into puppy naughtiness (give him a nylon bone to gnaw, he's good), or enter him in high-energy dog athletics to wear him out (though he might still enjoy more sedate classes like Canine Good Citizen or Nosework!). He could even bring joy to human seniors as a therapy dog! He LOVES to get pets, be groomed, and be the center of the universe. And when it is time for a nice long nap - he's more than happy to join you!

Ready to enjoy the good life with a good dog? Think MACK! If Mack isn't quite right for you (perhaps you can't quite spend EVERY moment petting him?), he says there are a couple other seniors at The Animal Shelter who are just about as SUPER:

Help Maizy go from "less adoptable" to Adopted!

This week is Petfinder.com's "Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet" Week, created to call attention to animals that get left behind for many reasons or reasons unknown. "Pets with medical problems" ranks second in the survey of animals left behind.

MAIZY would like everyone to know that whatever "medical problem" she had was completely taken care of when her leg was amputated. She has adapted perfectly to life as a three-legged dog. Maizy is a fantastic friend to people...

...and dogs

Think she can't play? Think again! She can run, race, retrieve, tug...you name it, she is up for it!

She can be afraid of men at first, but be gentle and start up a game, and she'll quickly be won over. And don't be offended if she barks at you - she's just asking to go play! So, when you see that Maizy with her three legs, don't think "poor dog." Think, "what game shall we play?"

Maizy has been waiting for her furever home since February 2009.

CLARA is a beautiful border collie mix girl. She has bursts of energy, but once those are out, she wants to stay close to people and interact. She has border collie smarts and loyalty, making her an awesome companion. She is fine with other dogs but her focus is on people. She has been waiting one year for someone to see how wonderful she is.

Meet Rowdy!

Do you like to root for the underdog? Then Rowdy needs you to root for him. He has been at the shelter for over 1 year, despite being a wonderful boy! Rowdy lived up to his name when he was younger, but he is maturing into a boy who still likes to have fun, but also likes to sit near you, gaze adoringly at your face, and let you stroke his incredibly soft head. He has a beautiful black-with-white coat with some unique outcroppings that make him one-of-a-kind. He is a perfect medium size, has gotten on well with all of his kennelmates, and will be loyal and loving. Rowdy is outside in Quad D.

1 Way 2 Help: Give Us Your Goods

Fall is on the way - the humidity has gone down, the moon has a yellow glow, the spiders are building their webs. Do you have the urge to clean?

If you've been bitten by the fall cleaning bug, please remember that The Animal Shelter accepts clean, desireable goods at the Secondhand Tails Thrift Store! The store, located at 6500 McClellan Blvd, is a major source of financial support for the shelter and its animals. We needs donors as well as shoppers. The store is open from 10-3 Monday through Saturday, or there is a drop-off area outside.

Got extra aluminum cans? How about giving them to us? Recycling cans provides much needed cash for those critical shelter needs. The shelter is located at 1201 Parkwood Drive in Anniston and is open from 10-4 Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri and 12-3 on Saturday (please do not leave cans outside the gates if we are closed!).

PetFest

Patti: Needing a Home for nearly 2 years

Patti is total doggie perfection. She came to the shelter at about 5 months old in fall 2008. She has the markings of a Brittany, but has a stout build and short hair.

Patti has the cutest personality in the world! Even as a baby, she would give a shy little look at was just heart-melting.

She is brimming with happiness and usually has a big grin on her face, though lately she's been feeling a little down after so many kennelmates have gotten homes, leaving Patti behind.

Patti loves everyone and everything. With other dogs, she is amazing. She adapts her play style to match the other dog. When kennelled with a Corgi mix, she played herding games with her. When kennelled with a dog with a gimpy hind leg, she was very careful. For this reason, it is hard to imagine she'd have trouble with dog-knowledgeable kids.

She doesn't mind handling or hugging, and we've never seen a single "grumpy" behavior. She has never given a second thought to the cats, and would probably make friends with one. That's just how she is.

Despite being a bit...um...stocky, Patti can turn on the speed, so she needs room to run and play.

Miss Patti has been kennelled for a very long time, so has no house training. But she is always tuned in to the people around her and will do whatever you want, so she should be highly trainable.

Carly: She's Waited a Lifetime

Carly is a young Catahoula mix athlete. Born at the shelter in February 2008, she has grown up confident, loving, and in great health. Obviously, though, she has not been in a house so house manners would be new to her.

Carly is best known for running around entertaining herself,

running around playing with you,

and then plastering herself to you for loving when she's finally got no running left to do.

She is a happy dog and always a pleasure to be with.

Carly shows little interest in the cats we pass on the way to the yard; however, they are crated. She can be particular about other dogs, especially other females close to her size. She has not been around children and due to her high energy level would probably be better off with older kids she could run around with.

Carly is eager to please and anyone with the experience, patience, love, and time to invest in helping Carly fit into a home life will be rewarded many times over. She truly is joy on four legs!

Meet Charity!

CHARITY is a sweet, mature girl looking for some quality snuggle time with a good friend. She is an "easy keeper" to be sure - a low energy, laid back Southern lady. A nice leash walk every day is about all she will demand, other than of course daily petting and massage sessions! Those leash walks will be important, since Charity has gotten a little portly here at the shelter.

Charity does very well with her equally low-energy beagle mix kennelmate. However, she does guard her petting sessions and will growl to keep another dog from mooching in. She doesn't snap, and responds to a mild scold. Poor Charity's canine teeth appear to have been filed down at some point in her life, and her front teeth are worn or broken to the gumline - poor girl! (This does not prevent her from eating, obviously!)So she certainly deserves all the love she can get.

What is happening this August? Keeping cool! So instead of the usual newsletter, we bring you a feature on the efforts of a single volunteer.

The Animal Shelter cats have been blessed by a benefactor, who has given his considerable talents to provide better lives for more cats. This handyman and carpenter saw a need, and decided to fill it. With quiet dedication, he has gradually transformed the shelter's cat housing. What has he accomplished?

More condos! Additional condos mean more of our adoptable cats can show us their best attributes, free from a cage.

Able to climb, perch, play, snuggle up in a house, under a house, or on a house, these lucky kitties can lead better lives while waiting for their forever homes.

This gentleman is proof positive that anyone with a talent, tenacity, and a tender heart can make a difference. Never think one person can't accomplish wonderful things.

We care for approximately 150 dogs, 1/3 of whom stay in outdoor housing, where they are under constant attack. But the cost of flea/tick preventive can literally bankrupt us! That's why our dogs need you!

Meet Tuesday!

Tuesday is about as much cuteness as you could want! With her absolutely striking black/white pattern divided right down the middle of her face, she is a head-turner. She has major canine athlete potential! She is an active girl who likes to be on the go, but just as important for a sport dog, she pays attention to people. She is absolutely fine with other dogs and so long as she stays busy, will not be any trouble.

Meet Millie!

Millie has the rare and strange distinction of being a smaller dog waiting for a home for over 1 year! Although Millie is taller than the toy breeds, she is still one of the daintier dogs in the kennel area. It is incredibly uncommon for the "under 30#" dogs to be unadopted, and Millie's case is especially odd because she is SUCH a good girl and cutie pie! She has that striking white & black coat and is wired-haired so great for the allergy-prone. Although she must be part terrier to get that wirey hair, she does not share their common traits of barking or digging. She is so quiet and laid-back, she is certain to become someone's best friend and cuddle buddy.

Help! Food Crisis Continues!

We continue to have an urgent need for food donations for our kittens, cats, and dogs!

Anyone who thinks the economy is recovering has not been to an animal shelter lately. This year has seen a VERY HIGH number of owner surrenders. Couple that with the usual puppy and kitten season, and we have a food crisis on our hands. Our normal food donations are not enough.

Brotherly Love

Sparky and Spooky need to be met together, because they are a bonded pair! These retriever boys were brought in together by animal control way back in August 2009. They have been housed together as they wait for a home, and they get along famously!

Sparky has the longer hair of the pair. Sparky is the one most likely to greet you first - he is full of smiles and wags and enjoys being fussed over.

Sparky has a beautiful longer coat that needs regular grooming. He did great with being groomed and seemed to enjoy the extra attention. He even got a little frisky afterward due to feeling so good, tho these boys are close to adult age (at least 2 probably 3 years old) and pretty calm.

Spooky gets his name from his gorgeous golden eyes. They are so pretty, they give you chills. Spooky is a little more reserved than Sparky, but Sparky has really taught him how great it is to greet people and get attention. He has a general calmness to him, and you can see in their group shot how much Sparky admires his brother Spooky.

Sparky and Spooky show signs of not having had all the love they deserve in the past. Neither one knows how to walk on a leash - they will cling to your legs as if uncertain what you expect of them. They both melt when being stroked, as if they've had very little stroking in the past, and absorb all your sweet-talk. They are emotionally dependent on each other, and we would LOVE for them to find the home they deserve, together.

Sparky and Spooky are offered for a single $90 adoption fee in the hopes that they can find a place together.

Don't let the name Grandpa fool you! This guy may be older in years, but he is plenty young at heart. He has the cutest 1/2 bobbed tail, knows how to make you feel special by paying rapt attention to you, and is more playful than the youngsters ~ Grandpa's got it ALL!

1 Way 2 Help: ID Please

Did you know that helping your shelter is as easy as keeping identification on your pets? One out of three pets becomes lost in their lifetime. Fewer than 25% of dogs and less than 2% of cats ever make it back home! Why? Because they don't have any identification, or their information is out-of-date.

Think of how much more space every shelter in America - including ours - would have if lost pets were returned to their families with a simple phone call.

The safest form of identication for your pets is a microchip. 52% of microchipped dogs make it home, as do 38% of microchipped cats. (Even microchipped pets don't make it home if their chip is not registered or their information is out of date.) The Animal Shelter will microchip your pet, including lifetime registration, for a $20 donation - that's TWO ways to help!

Please help yourselves, your pets, and us by making certain your pet is wearing current ID.

Are you ready for some fun? Terry is READY! This overgrown (30lb?) Jack Russell mix young boy is all about play time. He is so fun, funny, and loveable, it is just unimaginable that someone hasn't snatched him up in the last YEAR he has been waiting at the shelter. Surely there is a home out there wanting a playmate as cute and wonderful as Terry? He does great with other dogs, he's not a barker, and he would likely do fine with kids since he doesn't jump up or get grabby.

Don't you get food donations from businesses? We get damaged and close-dated food from local retailers.

Then how can you run low on food? Because so much "depends" - how much will the retailers have available? How many strays will be brought in and how many pets will be abandoned? How many adoptions take place? In today's economy, the number of animals being left behind is so high, and the number of adoptions so low, that the amount of food donated isn't always enough.

How can I help?

1. Donate! Just $10 can provide a 20lb bag of cat food; just $20 can provide a 40lb bag of dog food!. Click to Give!

2. Donate food! Bring Pedigree dog food or Cat/Kitten Chow (preferred, but we'll take what we can get!) to the shelter (1201 Parkwood Dr) or the thrift store (6500 McClellan Blvd).

3. Think adoption! When you are ready to add a family member, please make adoption your first option. A dog or cat doesn't need a pedigree to be a great companion, and mutts often lack the health issues of a poorly-bred purebred dog. Add to that the wonderful knowledge that you have freed up space for another homeless animal, and what could be better? Check out our pet listings

Meet Mushroom!

Mushroom is a gentle and sweet adult Shar Pei lab mix. She has been at the shelter for over 1 year waiting for adoption. Sadly, she is becoming very stressed inside the kennel, which causes her to act out inside. For that reason, she is constantly passed by as people think she is hyper or unfriendly. Nothing could be farther from the truth!

Mushroom is kenneled with her remaining unadopted puppy, who was born at the shelter in April 2009. Bella is a very active little girl, all about having fun but also driving her momma to distraction. Mushroom needs to be met outside and alone, where her sweet, calm, and loving personality can be seen. (Bella badly needs a good home that will give her lots to do. She loves playing, so using games will make teaching her things like sit, wait, and come quick and fun. She is in the picture with Mushroom, below. She is medium in size.)

Although fatal dog bites are statistically rare, dog bites are an unfortunate part of our relationship with dogs. Dog bites are often the result of miscommunication, and children are frequently on the receiving end.

The 3 Most Important Things to Teach Your Kids

Dogs Don’t Like Hugs and Kisses – Teach your kids not to hug or kiss a dog on the face. Hugging the family dog or face-to-face contact are common causes of bites to the face. Instead, teach kids to scratch the dog on the chest or the side of the neck.

Be a Tree if a Strange Dog Approaches – Teach kids to stand still, like a tree. Trees are boring and the dog will eventually go away. This works for strange dogs and anytime the family dog gets too frisky or becomes aggressive.

Never Tease a Dog – and never disturb a dog that’s sleeping, eating or protecting something.

The 2 Most Important Things Parents Can Do

Supervise – Don’t assume your dog is good with kids. If a toddler must interact with your dog, you should have your hands on the dog too. Even if your dog is great with kids and has never bitten – why take a chance?

Train the dog – Take your dog to obedience classes where positive-reinforcement is used. Never pin, shake, choke, hold the dog down or roll the dog over to teach it a lesson. Dogs treated this way are likely to turn their aggression on weaker family members. Involve older children in training the family dog while supervising. Don’t allow children to punish the dog. Condition the dog to enjoy the presence and actions of children using positive experiences.

The 3 Most Important Things Dog Owners Can Do

Spay or Neuter Your Dog – Neutered pets are calmer, healthier and less likely to be aggressive. Neutering prevents unwanted dogs that may end up in shelters or in less than ideal conditions where they may grow up to be poorly socialized or aggressive.

Condition Your Dog for the World – Give your puppy lots of new positive experiences. Train using positive methods i.e. clicker training.

Supervise Your Dog – Supervise your dog at all times around children. Do not allow children to hug and kiss the dog. If visiting children are bothering your dog, put the dog away or send the children home.

Spike makes friends at Cupcakes for Critters

On Friday, May 7, young Spike got lots of attention at SAVE's successful fundraiser, Cupcakes for Critters! This little toy terrier cutie was passed around from one new friend to the next, and handled everything wonderfully. He now has a host of fans! But he did not find his new home that day, so this socially seasoned little guy is still available for adoption.
